About us

Weightlifting Club Hoorn (WCH), founded by Omar Khathiri, is the place for weightlifting in the region. At WCH you will find excellent facilities and experienced coaches who help you reach your goals.

What sets us apart? The atmosphere. We focus on performance, but we also value a positive and safe culture on the training floor. Every member can grow in their own way, with respect for one another and in a place where safety comes first.

What we offer

A lifter stands up out of the squat with the barbell overhead during a training session.

Olympic weightlifting

WCH specialises in Olympic weightlifting. It is what the club is built around: everything we do serves the snatch and the clean & jerk.

Group class for beginners

In the beginners' classes you actively learn the technique of the snatch and the clean & jerk. We pay extra attention to technique, so that your posture, grip and positions are learned correctly from the start, at your own pace.

A lifter pulls the barbell high in a clean pull, plates loaded on the gym floor.

Group class for advanced lifters

In this group we refine your strength and technique with advanced lifts: muscle snatch, snatch or jerk from the blocks, push press, clean pulls. We work on every lift that makes you a better lifter, so you train stronger and with more awareness.

Personal training

Would you like to work on your technique with head coach Omar Khathiri one on one? Omar is known for his eye for detail and his years of experience. In a personal training session you have his full attention, with specific cues and insight into where you can get technically stronger.

Frequently asked questions

I am not that strong — is weightlifting for me?

Strength is only one part of weightlifting, and strength alone will not get you there. It is just as much about flexibility and mobility, so that you can reach every position with the right form. Explosiveness and speed matter too.

A competition has 'only' two lifts. Are those the only exercises you train?

No, a training session covers many different exercises. All of them relate to the snatch and the clean & jerk — we zoom in on the catch of the snatch, or the pull of the clean, for example. During each session we explain how an exercise works and what it is for.

What equipment do you use?

Almost everything we use is made by Eleiko. We are convinced they build the best equipment for weightlifting.
